SPORTS NUTRITION

A fresh way to approach your exercise

Sports nutrition is one of the specialties of the Nutritional Institute. Ian Craig, Simone do Carmo and Rachel Jesson are all ex-high level athletes, and their base passion lies in health. We start with a very strong assumption - that health is an underpinning requirement for athletic performance. You cannot hope to train and perform at your potential if your health is suboptimal, your food choices are under-par, and your lifestyle is stressful and busy. Your body will simply not recover from the exercise sessions you ask it to perform.

It is our passion to help athletes and active individuals, whether recreational or elite, to enjoy a long and healthy sporting career, finding your personal balance point where you nourish your underlying health, which in turn supports your physical performance. If you approach us for consultation support, we will firstly focus on your body-mind health via good food choices, lifestyle considerations, and stress management strategies, where relevant. We'll then turn our focus to your specific sports nutrition requirements, considering your daily nutrient intakes, pre-, during-, and post-exercise nutrition strategies, and your performance needs, all the time working with you as a unique individual.

Centre for Integrative Sports Nutrition

The Nutritional Institute has a sister company, called the Centre for Integrative Sports Nutrition (CISN). The focus of that company is to train practitioners within the integrative health strategies of sports nutrition - the first integrative/functional sports nutrition course in the world. It annually hosts 3-module courses live in London (UK) and online, plus a highly energetic natural sports cookery module. There is a lot of free material on the website, including blogs, articles, webinars, and podcasts.

Functional Sports Nutrition magazine

The Functional Sports Nutrition magazine was started in 2010 and is edited by Ian Craig and sub-edited by Simone do Carmo. It is based on the vision of extending 'functional' health-based practices into sport. Each edition includes four 2,000 word, fully referenced articles on various topics, plus a ‘Focus On’ product column and question and answer pieces with elite athletes, coaches and nutrition experts. Topics range from genetic individuality, through system health (nervous, endocrine, immune, digestive, musculoskeletal systems), to healthy sports and recovery drink options and discussions of nutrient timings. Because the human body is so complex, unlike many commercial magazines, we do not repeat topics and each magazine has completely fresh material.

Writers for the magazine are all industry experts, as opposed to journalists with an interest in the area. Additionally, all experts are specifically chosen for their ability to think beyond the standard sports nutrition paradigms and for their specialty areas of interest. Writers come from the fields of nutritional therapy, functional medicine, applied sports nutrition, exercise physiology, strength and conditioning, sports science and psychology, and may be university lecturers and researchers, health practitioners, exercise professionals and food and supplement industry experts.

Ian Craig BSc MSc, CSCS, INLPTA is an exercise physiologist, nutritional therapist, NLP practitioner and a lifestyle coach.

A competitive British middle-distance runner for 20 years, he is now a more leisurely runner and cyclist. Ian gained his BSc in Exercise Physiology from Glasgow University in his native Scotland, and his MSc in Exercise Physiology from the University of North Carolina in the United States. He later extended his interests in exercise and health into a BSc in Nutritional Therapy at Middlesex University in London.

Ian specialises in functional nutrition, a fast-evolving discipline that considers both the health and performance of an individual from an integrative health perspective. He is the editor of UK magazine; Functional Sports Nutrition (www.fsnmag.com), and has written for several South African publications, including Go Multi, Trail and Natural Medicine magazines. Additionally, he developed and facilitated the Middlesex University’s Personalised Sports Nutrition postgraduate course (www.cnelm.co.uk), the Functional Sports Nutrition Academy, the annual conference Sports Nutrition Live (www.sportsnutritionlive.com) and the new Centre for Integrative Sports Nutrition.

Ian is a professional member of the South African Association of Nutritional Therapists (SAANT), and runs a private nutrition practice in Johannesburg's Morningside Chiropractic and Sports Injury Clinic. Additionally, he is a consultant to genetics company DNAlysis Biotechnology in Johannesburg, and personalises exercise and nutrition strategies according to the individual attributes and lifestyles of his clients.

How Ian works

Ian works in a very educational style, which is a process that requires a certain amount of time for best outcomes. He achieves his best successes with individuals who commit to seeing him on a number of occasions. Ian will use the time together to extract a comprehensive case history, to get to know you as a person, to share pertinent information with you about your own body and mind, and to coach you towards improved health.

Simple cases
In cases of simple dietary manipulation, when your overall health is generally sound, he asks that you spend at least three sessions* with him - time for history taking, initial dietary guidelines and then a follow-up, with adjustments.

Intermediate cases
If you wish to explore your health to a deeper level, after the initial history taking, Ian may request that you do certain laboratory tests or measurements of other health and/or fitness parameters. He will start with some simple dietary and lifestyle recommendations, which will then be further individualised based on test information. Ian then suggests at least two further follow-ups to really refine your intervention, meaning five or more sessions* in total.

Complex and longer-term cases
If you require longer term support, Ian’s role will be more like that of a coach. For example; if you are an athlete periodising towards certain sporting events, regular interaction with Ian will help you to refine your nutrition, training programme and lifestyle patterns based on your stage of training, taking into account unexpected interruptions such as injury or illness. Alternatively, if for example, you are a chronic fatigue or auto-immune sufferer, or have some sort of other complex health imbalance, Ian will coach you through nutritional, exercise and lifestyle choices, with possible psychological input. In these cases, in addition to the early assessments and interventions, he would want to see you at weekly to monthly intervals, depending on your needs and wants.

Learning style
As a client of Ian’s, in order for you to become more empowered about your own health, he will recommend certain readings to you - these will include articles and worksheets that are relevant to elements of health that you’re working on, plus certain books that will help to expand out certain areas of information that he has shared with you. Additionally, once a sound base of nutrition and lifestyle has been set-up, he often makes use of nutritional supplements to guide the therapeutic process.

Rachel Jesson

Rachel is a health food coach, with the emphasis being on food. She focusses on self-empowerment towards improved food sourcing, food preparation and recipe creation. Here are a few common scenarios:

  • - The lay person looking for improved health, who realises that there is more to food quality than what the supermarket can offer, plus more to food preparation than what the extreme diets can offer.
    - The pregnant woman, looking for the best possible nourishment for herself and the best start to life for her unborn child, plus guidance with breast feeding for the new born.
    - Parents with young children, attempting to surf through an ocean of confusing dietary miss-information, from their first solid foods (weaning) right through to eating as an adult does. This includes enticing your children to eat nutrient dense foods daily, that nourish their mind, body and soul.
    - A clinical client from Ian, who is ready to make more radical lifestyle changes in support of their health, including a much closer look at their food.

Consultations are focussed purely on your individual needs and goals, and are based on the fundamentals of real food.

Rachel Jesson B.Phys.Ed (Hons) M.Phil is a trained teacher (Wits) and holds a Masters degree in Sports Science and Psychology from the University of Johannesburg.

Like Ian, she too is an NLP practitioner. Being an ex-South African triathlete, Rachel’s passion lies in food, health and physical fitness. Her current sporting interests are running, mountain-biking, CrossFit and yoga.

Rachel is a health food specialist, with a primary focus on practical and extremely healthy meal and snack options for athletes, active people and those who simply want to be healthy. She contributes regularly to the international publication Functional Sports Nutrition, she wrote a regular recipe column for Total Sports Nutrition magazine and has written for South African publication Natural Medicine magazine.

Rachel insists that for health, we need to keep things simple. She takes inspiration from previous generations with regard to the preparation of wholesome food. Her latest project involves self-sufficient organic agriculture, otherwise known as ‘agroecology’, and she is experimenting with biodiversity, eco-circles and planter boxes in her garden at home. She has proven that developing good soil structure is vital to increasing the nutrient density and taste of locally grown food.

Our genetic approach

After more than a decade since the human genome was sequenced, genetic science has come on leaps and bounds with regards to the degree in which we understand human individuality of dietary preferences and health traits. For example, some individuals fare extremely well on a low-carb, high-fat banting-style diet, whereas other experience low levels of energy, weight gain, cholesterol problems and general ill health. Others may fare well on a vegan diet, which is generally a very low-fat approach. However, the number of individuals who actually thrive on either of these two extreme approaches (high-fat or vegan) are few and far between. The majority of us perform better on a more moderate approach, but the question is which shade of grey to follow....?

Weight managment

Genetic tests such as DNA Diet can provide information that pertains to nutrition choices and weight management. For example; are there any issues with fat absorption or metabolism, insulin resistance, taste perception or even food addiction. Ian uses this genetic information to cut out a lot of the trial and error often involved in individualised nutrition recommendations.

Health

Genetic tests such as DNA Health can provide a huge amount of information about an individual’s susceptibility towards certain health imbalances and diseases. Rather than thinking of genes as being hardwired (as in the past), we now know that our genes interact fluently with our dietary, lifestyle and exercise patterns. Understanding our genetic blueprint means that we can make the best choices to maintain the best possible long-term health via intensional genetic expression.

Examples of health information that Ian will interpret from a DNA Health test include: cardiovascular risk, blood lipids (eg cholesterol), methylation (B-vitamin needs), bone health, detoxification, insulin resistance, caffeine sensitivity and lactose intolerance.

Sport

Based on available genetic information, Ian consulted with DNAlysis Biotechnology laboratory in Johannesburg to design an applied report that represented an individual’s exercise capacities in various regards.

DNA Sport is designed to assess an individual’s endurance and strength/power potentials, along with information about their likely rate of recovery and soft tissue injury susceptibility. Additionally, a ‘functional’ practitioner is able to extract a lot of physiological information from the report, which means that the ‘athlete’ can now understand more about nutritional and lifestyle needs that may enhance their exercise experience.

The test and report are not designed to be predictive of performance since we think that genetic science is still many years away from this capability. What the test has been very useful for is to help an individual to choose the types of training that is most likely to give them the ‘best bang for their buck’. It applies to elite athletes looking for an edge, as well as recreational exercisers wanting to get the most from their limited three hours of exercise per week.

Our book

A Review of Healthy Nutrition

Wholeome Nutrition for YouFew people would dispute the fact that there is a bewildering array of books available on the business of eating, fitness and nutrition, many of them, unfortunately, with (hidden) vested interests in the food industry and singular theories.

But every now and again a refreshing and ethical book based on sound, proven scientific principles comes onto the market, which is more than just another trendy diet book. Wholesome Nutrition is such a book. In it, nutritional therapist and exercise physiologist Ian Craig and his co-author, health food specialist and sports scientist Rachel Jesson, cover in detail the emotive topics of nutrition and health from a scientific perspective. They neatly unwrap all the jargon and pseudo- mystique, offering sensible, practical, economical everyday dietary approaches in a book that’s not only enjoyable and informative to read, but at the same time accessible to all South Africans who care about optimum health and the business of living life to the full. And most importantly, Wholesome Nutrition, stresses the fact that we are all different, and therefore a one-size-fits-all approach is counter productive to good health.
